Inspiring the Joy and Power of Reading

Book Trust aims to increase book choice and ownership, inspire a love of reading, and promote a culture of literacy in communities.

Research shows that 75% of children who are not proficient readers by the end of third grade are four times less likely to graduate high school.

Recent studies have shown that COVID has had a greater impact on low-income students’ education than on that of their higher income peers, further widening the achievement gap.

However, books alone are not enough. Studies confirm a longstanding belief guiding Book Trust’s program: ownership and choice matter – and are more motivating to students than access alone. Book Trust is laser-focused on combating this impact on young children’s early reading development, now more than ever.

In Their Words

“Many of my students are unable to afford to buy their own books and many families have limitations when trying to get to a local library. Without Book Trust they would not have a home library.”
“Students are reading on their own or to their family members! They are feeling energized by the love of reading!”
“Having access to a variety of books on a monthly basis helps our students understand the importance of learning to read and being a reader for life.”
“My students need to get their hands on books and enjoy them. They will read when they are excited about books, and they are always excited when their Book Trust books arrive.”
“Students feel a sense of ownership towards reading when they have their own books. They are more motivated and engaged in their reading.”
“The students love looking through the flyers and making their own choice. They get so excited for their book selection. It also teaches them to budget which is great!”
